There were a lot of interesting points made in today’s pages concerning taking responsibility in projects, as well as the importance of having mutual trust within teams.
From all of this, there was one tip which stood out, conveniently labelled as “the most important tip in the book”. Here it is:
“You Have Agency
Does your work environment suck? Is your job boring? Try to fix it. But don’t try forever. As Martin Fowler says, “you can change your organization or change your organization.”
If technology seems to be passing you by, make time (in your own time) to study new stuff that looks interesting. You’re investing in yourself, so doing it while you’re off-the-clock is only reasonable.
Want to work remotely? Have you asked? If they say no, then find someone who says yes.
This industry gives you a remarkable set of opportunities. Be proactive, and take them.”
This sense of freedom and opportunity is something that drew me to learning programming in more depth: if you’re proactive enough you can make anything with just about anything.
From the many industries and companies forced into work-from-home situations, the flexibility of software engineering is highlighted by the lesser impact this shift had on it.
